SOUTHAMPTON WWI MEMORIAL RESTORATION PROJECT:

Preserve and Protect the Legacy of Those Who Served

The World War I Memorial in Agawam Park, Southampton Village, is a historically significant monument designed by William Edgar Moran and built in 1923. Dedicated on August 19, 1923, it honors 325 Southampton men and boys who served in World War I. The Memorial’s limestone structure features eagles, laurel wreaths, poppy swags, and the shields of France, England, New York, and the United States. Visitors can see Lake Agawam and the ocean through the colonnade, where the names of the fallen are carved and gilded.

Save the World War I Monument

Southampton Village is committed to a long-term solution to restore the monument, which has severe structural damage, to its original grandeur. In order to restore this historic landmark and preserve the legacy of those who served, the Village needs to raise $500,000.

These crucial funds will be dedicated to the physical restoration of Memorial as well as to establish a Foundation for its ongoing maintenance.

Saving Southampton's World War I Memorial

I loved watching the July 4th parade as a young boy in Southampton. The historic Village was decorated with American flags and patriotic bunting.

However, I noticed that in the shadows of this joyous celebration, the World War I Memorial in Agawam Park was literally crumbling. Sadly, it is an important historical moment that was too long forgotten and now marred with years of neglect.

As the Memorial marked its 100th anniversary in 2023, it is time to take action to raise the funds necessary to restore this important landmark.

Please help to restore the World War I Memorial. I cannot think of a better way to honor the legacy of those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we have today.

Let’s envision a Veterans Day and July Fourth where the Southampton Village community can come together for the rededication of a restored World War I Memorial.
